An Alabama native, Chaplain Carmichael graduated from the Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1961. He received orders for active-duty service on July 7, 1963. He served his country for 20 years, including wartime service in Vietnam, until he retired October 1, 1983. His domestic posts included Ft. Stewart, Georgia, and Ft. Knox, Kentucky. He worked for the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Lexington until his retirement in January 2006.
