L.W. Boots was raised in an orphanage in Jefferson County, Kentucky, until he enlisted in the US Army in 1944 as a high school student. He served in World War II with Company I of the 157th Regiment.  He was recalled from inactive duty by the Army during the Korean War.

Following his honorable discharge in December 1951, Boots married and worked at Lexington’s Veterans Affairs Hospital as an attendant. He remained an active member of Lexington’s community until 2022, when he relocated to Thomson-Hood Veterans’ Center.
