Born on September 22, 1945, Anthony “Tony” Burgett joined the Navy in 1964. As a hospital corpsman, Burgett served in Vietnam, assigned to a Marine hospital. He was wounded in action twice and received two Purple Hearts.
After his honorable discharge, Burgett earned a BSN in Nursing in Wichita, Kansas, and a Master’s of Nursing from the University of Kentucky. He worked at the Lexington Veterans Affairs Hospital for 30 years, ending his career as the Associate Director of Patient Care Services at the VA. Since retirement, Burgett has volunteered as a docent at Ashland, the Henry Clay Estate, for Movable Feast, and as a program chair for the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.
